Klopp explains on-field Shaqiri exchange

Jurgen Klopp has revealed why he took Xherdan Shaqiri to task after Liverpool’s Carabao Cup defeat to Chelsea.

The Reds crashed out of the third round tie courtesy of goals from Emerson and Eden Hazard’s spectacular solo strike after the hosts had led through Daniel Sturridge.

Television cameras caught Klopp chastising the Swiss winger on the Anfield pitch in the immediate aftermath of his side’s 2-1 defeat to the Londoners.

But the Liverpool manager revealed that the exchange related solely to a stoppage-time free kick which Shaqiri allowed Jordan Henderson to take.

He said: “I spoke about a free-kick – the last one.

“Mo [Salah] was standing wide and a whole bunch of [Chelsea] players were in the direction where we shot the ball.

“If he could have played in Mo on a one-on-one situation in the last minute of the game it would have been not too bad.

“Maybe it was too loud in the stadium and they did not hear me.

“It was only about the free-kick, nothing else.”
