Klopp defends Karius after latest Liverpool blunder

Jurgen Klopp has rallied to Loris Karius’ defence following his latest Liverpool blunder.

Karius fumbled a free kick into the path of Johnny Smith, who reduced Tranmere Rovers’ deficit in their friendly defeat to the Reds on Tuesday.

The goalkeeper’s latest gaffe came on his second appearance since being at fault for his side’s infamous Champions League final defeat last season.

Klopp routinely backed Karius in the wake of Liverpool’s defeat to Real Madrid and claimed a concussion was behind his performance in the 3-1 reversal.

And the Liverpool manager maintained his support for the under-fire stopper after his mistake in the game with the newly-promoted League Two side.

He said: “No one likes that goal but, if we talk about that, then the second goal is Milly’s [James Milner’s] fault.

“Two brilliant footballers make mistakes but we only talk about one. We can’t make a story after each mistake.

“Let’s carry on and make the best of the situation and learn from it.”

Liverpool are still assessing goalkeepers to either replace Karius or serve as direct competition, with Simon Mignolet expected to depart this summer.

But hopes of landing Roma’s Alisson Becker have so far been dashed by the Serie A giant’s high valuation of the Brazil international.
