Liverpool Biennial reveals exciting programme for 2016 commemorations

Liverpool Biennial 2016 has announced an exciting programme of events at a media event at Constellations.

The schedule for the ninth edition of the famous free art event- the largest contemporary art festival in the UK- was unveiled by Biennial Director Sally Tallant and runs from July 9-16.

It is set to feature a wide-ranging body of work from 42 artists from across the globe, including Australia, Belgium, China, Iran, Japan amongst others, as well as Birkenhead-born Mark Leckey.

Featuring a variety of media, such as film, painting, sculpture, design and sound installations, the programme will seek to make use of Liverpool’s fine and varied architectural landscape and topography, with locations such as ABC Cinema, Clarence Dock, Tate Liverpool, FACT, Bluecoat and Cains Brewery all listed as venues for the event.

The theme of this year’s Biennial is ‘Time Travel,’ with the festival’s experienced team drawing inspiration from Liverpool’s past, present and future in conceiving a series of episodes that highlight the changing face of both the city, and indeed modern life itself.

Highlights of the episodic-themed programme include the Children’s Episode- the first adult-child collaborative project commissioned by the festival which will feature work from Childwall Academy students- and an episode about Ancient Greece- the inspiration behind much of Liverpool’s fine architecture- that will see visitors to the Tate Liverpool transported back into Ancient Greece through the medium of art.

Speaking at the event, Biennial Director Tallant spoke of her desire to create a lasting artistic legacy on the city.

She said: “We are delighted to give artists the time and the opportunity to make new work and respond to the fabric of the city.

“Building on our year-round programme of commissions in Liverpool….we hope to create a long-lasting contribution to the cultural life of the city and make it a place where artists can live and thrive.”
