Liverpool agree Coutinho fee with Barcelona

Liverpool have struck a £142 million deal with Barcelona for Philippe Coutinho.

Coutinho missed the Reds’ mid-season trip to Dubai in hopes of a fee being agreed to finally secure his transfer to the Nou Camp in the coming days.

The Brazil international will fly out to Spain on Saturday to finalise terms of his move after the La Liga champions-elect reached a deal with Anfield officials.

Barca are set to pay Liverpool in the region of £105m upfront while performance-related clauses would push that figure up to £142m overall.

Should Coutinho meet all those bonuses during his time in Catalonia, he would become the second most-expensive player in football history.

The 25-year-old has not featured for Liverpool since transfer window re-opened this month, missing wins over Burnley and Everton in the FA Cup through injury.

He was also absent in the summer window with a back problem amid Barcelona’s failed initial pursuit, which saw Anfield officials reject three successive offers.

An announcement confirming Coutinho’s departure is expected later this weekend, barely five years after his £8.5m move from Inter Milan.

The Serie A giants will receive £2.1m as a sell-on fee from their original sale of Coutinho.
