FA to investigate after Merseyside football match was abandoned

An FA investigation is underway after a school football match was abandoned. Trouble flared up during a cup game between Wirral Schools and Sefton Schools U13s.

It is believed that scuffles broke out when one group of spectators disagreed with a referee’s decision to give a player a red card.

It is alleged that the group turned on the referee and other parents both verbally and physically.

The violence then spread on to the pitch with a similar fight breaking out among the players. At this point the referee was forced to stop the match which was being plated at Holy Family School in Thornton.

Wirral Schools FA’s Secretary Will Roland has commented that the events had shocked both the parents and pupils involved.

In a statement Ken Davies, Secretary of the Merseyside County Schools Football Association, said: “The MCSFA is fully aware of events relating to last Saturday’s u13 fixture between Sefton and Wirral.

“We are mandated to follow the English Schools’ FA disciplinary code and safeguarding policy. These have been triggered and are in due process.”

The referee reported the pitch side behaviour to the English Schools Football Association (ESFA) who confirmed that there will now be an FA disciplinary investigation.
