Old Trafford legend reveals almost joining Liverpool

Edwin van der Sar has revealed that he almost joined Liverpool in 1999.

Van der Sar went on to become an iconic figure at Manchester United, where he lifted four Premier League titles and the Champions League for a second time.

But the former Holland goalkeeper could have found himself at the other end of the East Lancs Road as part of Gerard Houllier’s rebuilding plans with the Reds.

Sander Westerveld was drafted in by the erstwhile Liverpool manager that summer but Van der Sar admits that he was shown around Anfield.

However the current Ajax CEO instead chose to join Serie A giants Juventus.

“When I left Ajax in 1999, I travelled to Liverpool and spoke to Houllier,” he told Four Four Two.

“I was shown around Anfield and also met with the chairman and a couple of the players.

“I thought about it, but when Juventus came to the table I came to the conclusion that it would be a bigger challenge to play in Italy.”
