Liverpool FC draw Hoffenheim in Champions League play-off

Liverpool will face Hoffenheim in their Champions League play-off tie.

Roberto Firmino is set to return to his former club later this month as the Reds aim to reach the group stages of Europe’s elite club competition.

The Brazil international scored 38 times in 140 outings of his four years with the Bundesliga outfit before making a £29 million switch in summer 2015.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will travel to the Rhein-Necker-Arena for the first leg on August 15 or 16 with the return tie taking place at Anfield a week later.

Hoffenheim coach Julian Nagelsmann has described the tie as ‘Murphy’s Law’, with his side representing one of Liverpool’s more difficult play-off opponents.

He said: “It’s kind of Murphy’s Law.

“I was lucky to have watched them at the Audi Cup this week [in] two very good games.

“But it’s a very difficult one [in the Champions League], of course, but there was no real easy thing anyway,

“We can play against a great opponent in a legendary stadium, which is something special but we have to win against Liverpool too.

I had a feeling [it would be] Liverpool and I think it’s a great thing for fans as well as for the media.”
