Liverpool school crowdfunding to ‘revolutionise’ maths

A Liverpool school have launched a crowdfunding campaign to help ‘revolutionise’ maths.

St Francis Xavier’s College in Woolton have so far raised over £1,500 in a bid to help change the way students study the current curriculum.

Teacher Kenny Glover began the project on fundraising platform Rocket Fund, which helps schools to incorporate the latest technology into lessons.

Over 80 donors, including former students, staff members, parents and governors, have backed the bid to put Hegarty Maths into the curriculum for all 1,094 students.

Hegarty Maths was started by maths teacher Colin Hegarty in 2011, where he would create YouTube videos to help his students further understand his lessons.

The method has been updated since its inception to allow students and teachers access lessons, assessments and tutorials in and out of the classroom.

Currently 5,000 children a day in 200 different places around the world use the programme.

The website allows students to access ten minute tutorials for each topic on the curriculum, ending with a series of questions at the end to be completed.

Pupils can provide feedback for their teacher to respond to, helping the student to understand the topic they are studying.

Kenny believes the programme will benefit everyone as it allows the teacher to monitor how long students spends on a topic and how they answer a question.

He said: “Like many schools now, we are constantly seeking avenues to source the best resources for our pupils who deserve nothing but the best.

“It’s been so rewarding to have ex-pupils, parents and staff members support our campaign and help us hit our target!

“Hegarty Maths promotes independent learning and enables pupils to regularly communicate with their teachers as well as providing an at home ‘personal tutor’.

“This pioneering online maths tool shows how technology can be used for good in the classroom. We can’t wait to roll it out across the whole school in September.”

Les Rippon, SFX’s executive headteacher, added: “The Maths department in St Francis Xavier’s College is constantly striving to make online learning and support a key component for the progress of pupils in the school.

“At a time when school budgets are under pressure, it’s reassuring to know we can rely on our school community to invest and support in new learning tools at SFX.”
