Work to transform the former Royal Liverpool Hospital site will begin this summer.
Plans for the Prescot Street building, which is in the process of dismantling since the hospital relocated in 2022, have been approved by Liverpool City Council.
They include permission being granted to create a new road, footpath and cycleway to connect the Royal’s new main entrance drop-off at Mount Vernon to its old base.
A temporary staff car park with capacity for up to 116 spaces will also be created as health chiefs plan to line the route with greenery and a clear view of the new facility.
The car park is expected to be implemented by the end of 2027 while longer-term proposals including a potential multi-storey option as part of the wider development.
A provisional completion date for the latest phase of the Royal’s footpring has been set for the end of next year with work expected to commence this August.
James Sumner, chief executive of NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group, said: “We are delighted that planning permission for this next phase of development on the Royal Liverpool University Hospital site has been approved.
“This will transform the site into a more accessible, user-friendly and green environment, ensuring it meets the needs of those using it, while supporting our ambitions for future development that will benefit patients, visitors and staff for years to come.”
