Barcelona fail in latest Philippe Coutinho bid

Barcelona have failed in their latest attempt to sign Philippe Coutinho.

Reports in Spain suggest that the Catalan giants had looked to return with an improved bid for the playmaker after Liverpool rejected a £72 million approach.

But Barca’s efforts to land Coutinho have suffered a fresh setback as they sought to offer Arda Turan to the Reds as part of a proposed transfer.

Turan has struggled to stake a regular first-team place since arriving at the Nou Camp from Atletico Madrid in 2015, making just 54 competitive appearances.

The Turkey international, 30, is looking to secure a move to an elite European club after failing to unseat the trident of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez.

However Don Balon claim that Turan has rejected the chance to join Liverpool as he does not believe his boyhood team represents a sideways move from Barca.

Jurgen Klopp will hold talks with Coutinho in efforts to seek reassurances that he remains committed to his Anfield career despite the £72m bid.

Liverpool are unwilling to entertain the prospect of selling the Brazilian with Klopp reiterating the stance on Friday, insisting ‘we are not a selling club’.

Coutinho, 25, became the club’s highest earner in February when he penned a new five-year contract understood to be worth £150,000 per week.

He repeatedly shot down suggestions of a switch to Barcelona at the end of last season in interviews with media in his homeland.
