Liverpool could become the new home for Channel 4 under plans by Phil Redmond.
Redmond has launched the city’s bid to host the UK’s flagship independent TV channel as the creator of two of its leading shows in Brookside and Hollyoaks.
Up to 800 jobs could be created should a Government consultation recommend that Channel 4 relocates from its current headquarters in central London.
The decision to assess whether the publicly owned broadcaster should move comes in the wake of an 18-month review into its governance.
Numerous local bodies are backing Mr Redmond’s bid including Liverpool City Council, John Moores University and the Liverpool Film Office.
He said: “As one of the founding producers that helped Channel 4 develop its distinctive voice I long felt that there was a need to find some way to refresh its vision and reinvigorate its voice.
“Moving the channel out of London seems the right solution. Moving it to Liverpool, the UK’s second city of culture, seems the obvious solution.”
Other regions are also hoping to win the right as the new home of Channel 4 with Brighton, the West Midlands, Greater Manchester and Yorkshire among them.
