Liverpool’s Commonwealth Games plans revealed

Liverpool will transform its waterfront in its bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Plans to mix the city’s iconic venues along with several prominent sporting venues stands at the heart of its attempts to win the UK’s nomination.

At the heart of the bid is the redevelopment of Bramley-Moore Dock, which is set to become the new home of Everton FC and will host athletics events.

A temporary running track will be put in place at the end of the 2021/22 season, in time for the games, in order not to disrupt the playing surface.

The Blues’ current stadium at Goodison Park is set to be included as the boxing finals venue while Anfield will host the opening ceremony and rugby sevens.

Swimming events will take place at a floating pool near the Albert Dock while Indoor events such as badminton, judo, netball and wrestling will be at the ACC Arena.

Mann Island will set the scene for other athletics events including the pole vault, long jump and triple jump while Stanley Park will hold the lawn bowls competition.

Manchester has also lent its support with optional sports events of cycling and T20 cricket being held at the Velodrome and Old Trafford Cricket Ground respectively.

Brian Barwick, chairman of Liverpool 2022, said: “Liverpool is a world-class city and what we have unveiled today is truly transformational.

“We are utilising our existing, world-class venues such as ACC Liverpool, Anfield, St George’s Hall and Goodison Park, as well as facilities linked to the massive regeneration that is already taking place in the Bramley-Moore Dock area that would be home to the athletes village.

“Some of the other eye catching plans, such as the dynamic new pool in the docks and the creative approach to working with Everton FC’s new state of art stadium will set the bar for how major games leave a real and tangible legacy.

“We are also being transformational in how we present sports such as athletics, by bringing some of the jumping events to spectacular locations in our docks.

“This plan is both compelling and deliverable and will be amazing for the athletes, the spectators and the Commonwealth – and crucially is designed to leave Liverpool transformed.”

A state-of-the-art Athletes Village will be built beside Bramley-Moore Dock on Nelson Dock as part of Peel Holdings’ £5.5 billion Liverpool Waters scheme.

The city has launched its official bid website with all the information about Liverpool’s bid, along with the hashtag: #IAmLiverpool2022, urging people to use it and get behind the bid.
