Liverpool FC enter race for Monaco’s Kylian Mbappe

Liverpool have joined the hunt for Kylian Mbappe after holding talks with the forward’s agent.

Europe’s elite clubs are all tracking Mbappe after he helped inspire Monaco to Ligue 1 success and a run to the Champions League semi final last season.

Real Madrid remain the forerunners for the France international’s signature despite strong interest from Premier League clubs including Arsenal.

But the Reds are also in the frame amid claims of a failed £64 million bid last month, with Jurgen Klopp making contact with Mbappe’s representatives.

Monaco are unlikely to accept offers less than £100m for the prodigious striker, who scored 24 times in all competitions during the previous campaign.

The pursuit of Mbappe comes in the wake of Liverpool ending their interest in Virgil van Dijk amid claims the Southampton defender had been ‘tapped up’.

Van Dijk appeared set to clinch a £60m move to Anfield after indicating it was his preferred destination ahead of interest from Manchester City and Chelsea.

But Liverpool issued a public apology to Southampton on Wednesday as the threat of a potential investigation by the Premier League continues to loom.
