Liverpool FC offer defender new five-year deal

Joe Gomez is set to be offered a new long-term contract by Liverpool after making his long-awaited return from injury.

Gomez was previously sidelined for over 14 months before completing his Reds comeback in the FA Cup stalemate with Plymouth Argyle earlier this month.

His current deal at Anfield is set to expire in summer 2020 but Jurgen Klopp is keen to extend the defender’s stay beyond that with a fresh extension.

The 19-year-old made a lasting first impression upon his arrival from Charlton Athletic in 2015 and was quickly thrust into the first-team spotlight.

But an ACL injury sustained on England under-21 duty just months later saw his season ended within a week of Klopp’s appointment as Liverpool manager.

However that has done little to deter the Kop boss’ desire to retain Gomez’s services in the long run with negotiations over a new five-year contract currently ongoing.

Klopp sees the versatile centre-back as an important prospect for Liverpool’s future and is keen to tie him to the club until the end of the 2021/22 season.

Should Gomez pledge his future until 2022, it would mirror Phiippe Coutinho’s own renewed commitment after he became the club’s highest-paid player.
