Liverpool FC legend fires Coutinho exit warning

Jamie Carragher has warned that Philippe Coutinho’s new contract will not help Liverpool keep the playmaker out of Barcelona and Real Madrid’s clutches.

Earlier this week Coutinho penned a record-breaking deal, worth £200,000 per week, to commit his future to the Reds until summer 2022.

The Brazil international was previously linked with a move to Barcelona while Paris Saint-Germain failed in an audacious £23 million bid last summer.

But Carragher believes that overtures from either of La Liga’s leading duo will inevitably see Coutinho follow in Luis Suarez’s footsteps in leaving Anfield.

“We’ve had plenty of players in the past Liverpool who have signed big contracts then moved on,” he told Sky Sports.

“If Coutinho wasn’t happy, he wouldn’t sign a contract. We hear there’s no release clause which again doesn’t mean everything.

‘Liverpool are no different to every other club in world football besides two.

“If Barcelona or Real Madrid come for one of your players and pay what you want, they’re going, because 99 per cent of players want to play for those two clubs.

“If that happens, it means, if they’re unbelievable for Liverpool, then you have to thank him, as we did with Luis Suarez.”
