Liverpool FC consider Southampton shock

Trent Alexander-Arnold could be a surprise inclusion for Liverpool in tonight’s EFL Cup semi-final encounter with Southampton.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have to overcome a one-goal deficit when they welcome the Saints to Anfield this evening for the return leg of their last four encounter.

But the Reds may be forced to call on home-grown youngster Alexander-Arnold as Nathaniel Clyne continues to struggle with an abdominal muscle injury.

Clyne has failed to train since last weekend’s defeat to Swansea City and the England international risks missing the clash with his former club.

That could open the door for Alexander-Arnold, who the Liverpool Echo claim is on standby to feature in the encounter after just six first-team appearances.

The 18-year-old was handed his senior Liverpool debut by Klopp during the last 16 tie with Tottenham before making five futher outings for his boyhood club.

Earlier this month Alexander-Arnold made his first Premier League start in the 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford.
