Liverpool Sound City announces 2017 headliners

The Human League and The Kooks are among a host of headline acts that will be performing at Liverpool Sound City 2017.

Phil Oakey and his iconic band will be appearing at the UK’s largest city-based festival, celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, in May.

A celebration of the English avant-garde is set to launch this year’s Clarence Dock event on May 25, featuring a trio of some of the most influential bands of the modern era.

Among them will be the Art of Noise, iconic Manchester post-punk band A Certain Ratio and headliners Human League.

“We’re absolutely delighted to be headlining the first night of Sound City’s 10th birthday celebrations,” said frontman Oakey.

“We love playing for the people of Liverpool, they are properly passionate music fans and we’ve always felt at home in their beautiful city.

“And although we haven’t been there yet from what we’ve heard the setting of Sound City’s iconic industrial landscape is pretty unique and will be a perfect backdrop for our music, we can’t wait to play there.”

Music legend John Cale takes the stage on Friday, May 26 with Europe’s only performance of The Velvet Underground & Nico as part of the album’s 50th anniversary.

A number of additional tickets have been released for the event, initially announced as a stand alone show but since brought into Sound City’s line-up.

Cale will also be a key-note speaker the following day, with a wealth of stories and insights accrued over a career of more than 50 years in the industry.

Nu-disco quartet Metronomy top Saturday’s bill, treating Sound Citizens to a genre-busting set of sublime electronica packed with hits from five studio albums.

Also featured on the day’s impressive line-up are lo-fi rockers The Kills, nu-punk upstarts Slaves, art-pop provocateur Peaches, Libertines front man Carl Barat & The Jackals and many more.

The Kooks are set to provide the perfect finale for this momentous weekend.

Having closed the festival in 2014, the indie rockers provide a knowing nod to the rich history of Sound City with support from post-punk trio White Lies.

Liverpool’s very own psychedelic adventurers The Vryll Society and a host of other diverse and exciting acts will also be performing on the Sunday.

Dave Pichilingi, CEO of Sound City, said: “We’ve pulled out all the stops for our tenth birthday.

“We wanted to do something really special, not just to mark to occasion but also to reward all those loyal Sound Citizens who have come with us on this amazing ten-year journey and I think you’ll agree the line-up is incredible.

“I think the term legend is over-used these days but we have bona fide music legends on the bill every single day of the festival and we still have lots more to announce.

“It is without doubt the best line-up we’ve ever announced and one not to be missed. It’s going to be one hell of a party!”

Tickets go on sale at 9am on Friday, January 27. Tickets range from £35 per day to £65 for both weekend day. For more information and ticket sales visit: www.liverpoolsoundcity.co.uk
