Liverpool FC legends to take on Real Madrid at Anfield

Liverpool’s legends will do battle with their Real Madrid counterparts in a charity match at Anfield in March.

The sides previously faced off in June 2015 for the Corazon Classic during which the reigning European champions came back from two goals down to win 4-2.

Over 70,000 people attended the game at the Santiago Bernabeu and the return leg has been scheduled for Saturday, March 25 during the international break.

A host of Anfeld icons will step out on their former stomping ground again with Robbie Fowler, Ian Rush and Jamie Carragher among those already confirmed to play.

Real are set to include several of their own Galacticos with Roberto Carlos, Luis Figo and Steve McManaman, who played for both clubs, included.

All proceeds from the match will go to the LFC Foundation, the club’s official charity which aims ot improve the health and life chances of children and young people in Merseyside and beyond.

“I remember being a kid watching Midweek Sports Special and Real Madrid seemed to be on that all the time so I was always brought up on them,” Fowler told Click Liverpool.

“Watching all the great players they had from years ago; (Hugo) Sanchez, (Bernd) Schuster in midfield so I think they’ve always had an embarrassment of quality players.

“At first-team level, obviously my mate (McManaman) went over and played for them so I always looked out for their results when he was playing.

“But you play against them now and see some of the names – Figo, Roberto Carlos, Butragueno – all these players are massive household names.

“What is brillant about it is that because of who we are and what we’ve done in the game, they become friends.

“You wouldn’t have seen them for years and then all of a sudden you’ll bump into them in the room and it’s as though you’ve known them for years and years.

“Maybe that’s the Real Madrid way – similar to the Liverpool way.

“I think we’ve always looked after our own and you can see the class, not just in the way they play but how they are within themselves.

“I think that’s very much what we are about as well.”
