Liverpool FC fear Coutinho could miss Christmas run-in

Philippe Coutinho will undergo a scan on his ankle injury amid fears he suffered ankle ligament damage against Sunderland.

Coutinho was stretchered off with the problem following a tackle from Didier Ndong during the Reds’ 2-0 win over the Black Cats.

The Brazil playmaker left Anfield on crutches with his right foot encased in a protective boot which prompted concerns that he was set for a lengthy lay-off.

Liverpool’s medical team assessed Coutinho’s injury at Melwood on Sunday and have recommended that he undergoes a scan on his ankle early next week.

It is feared that the extent of the scan will show that the 24-year-old has suffered ligament damage, which will come as a huge blow to Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Should Liverpool’s worst fears be confirmed, Liverpool are set to be without Coutinho for their unenviable run of fixtures over the Christmas period.

The Anfield club face six Premier League games next month, including a Merseyside derby with Everton and a New Year’s Eve clash with Manchester City.
