Konate set to leave Liverpool as free agent

Ibrahima Konate’s five-year stay with Liverpool will end next month.

Konate was previously locked in negotiations over extending his stay at Anfield and revealed after April’s Merseyside derby win over Everton that a decision was ‘close’.

The France international further hinted at a successful conclusion by admitting there was ‘a big chance’ he would remain with Arne Slot’s side for next season.

But Konate’s time with the Reds will now end when his current deal expires on June 30 despite three years’ worth of talks with the club’s hierarchy.

He becomes the third established first-team player to leave this summer as a free agent following Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson out the exit door.

Konate, 27, made 183 appearances, scoring seven times, since joining from RB Leipzig in May 2021 when his £35 million release clause was triggered.

He also won five major honours including a Premier League title and established himself as one half of the club’s established centre-back pairing with Virgil van Dijk.
