Liverpool defender makes transfer plea

Sepp van den Berg feels Liverpool’s valuation of him is a barrier to leaving.

Van den Berg arrived at Anfield in summer 2019 and made four competitive appearances before a succession of loan spells over the next three seasons.

But despite attracting interest from the likes of PSV Eindhoven, Wolfsburg and Mainz, no club has met the Dutch centre-back’s £20 million price tag.

The Reds are understood to believe Van den Berg’s fee to be reasonable and in line with the market, where other young defenders commanded similar fees.

But the 22-year-old, who signed a contract extension in 2022, has voiced his concerns that the current figure might dissuade potential suitors this summer.

“I know in today’s market [high prices] will happen,” said Van den Berg.

“For the price they want for me, hmmm…Liverpool may think it is right as I had a good season, if they want £20-£25 million, that is a lot more.

“Hopefully we can find a way. Maybe I stay, maybe I go. The first reaction from me is that it was quite high, but it is also a compliment.

“For me, it is about playing time. If I get it here, there is no better place to be. Of course, it is a compliment but it makes it difficult – £20M is majorly high.

“Of course, I am here now. Liverpool is one of the biggest, if not the biggest club in the world. It has always been my dream.

“I am here to show myself I am Liverpool worthy. If [Arne Slot] gives me a chance and likes me, there’s a big chance of me staying.

“But we are still early in the window so we will see.”
