Former Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara has announced his retirement.

Thiago arrived at Anfield during summer 2020, mere weeks after he had helped Bayern Munich clinch the previous season’s Champions League.

He won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup during his time on Merseyside as Jurgen Klopp’s side hunted down a potential quadruple in 2021/22.

But injuries restricted Thiago to just 98 outings for the Reds across his four years at the club and ended last season with a solitary substitute appearance.

The Spain international became one of several players from the Klopp era to bow out when his contract expired at the end of the previous campaign.

Now 33, Thiago announced on Monday that he was hanging up his boots.

He said: “I will always be willing to give back what I have been given and I am grateful for the time I have enjoyed it.

“Thank you, football. And to all who accompanied me and made me a better player and person along the way.

“See you soon, Thiago.”
