Liverpool have reached an agreement with Southampton for Romeo Lavia.

Jurgen Klopp’s side held a keen an interest in the teenage midfielder this summer yet saw three bids rejected by their ex-Premier League counterparts.

But after a left-field approach for Brighton’s Moises Caicedo fell short due to the player preferring to join Chelsea, Anfield chiefs have returned for Lavia.

A deal understood to be worth £60 million has been struck for the 19-year-old despite Southampton previously holding out for a valuation of around £50M.

However the Reds are still facing face competition for Lavia’s signature from Chelsea, who lodged a £55M approach for the player at the end of last week.

That prompted Klopp’s side to submit a British transfer record offer of £110M to Brighton for Caicedo, only for the player’s heart to remain set on a move to London.

Both teams played out a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge in Sunday’s Premier League opener ass their pursuit of the two enforcers remained no clearer.
