The Football Association has charged Jurgen Klopp with improper conduct.

Klopp was sent off in Liverpool’s win over Manchester City last Sunday after he had reacted angrily to linesman Gary Beswick over a foul not awarded.

Referee Anthony Taylor subsequently gave the German his marching orders, which has now let to retrospective action by English football’s governing body.

The Reds’ boss has until Friday to respond to his FA charge but expects to be in the dugout for West Ham United’s visit to Anfield on Wednesday evening.

He said: “It was a very, very intense game, with a lot of decisions both managers didn’t understand, on both sides.

“I’m not happy with my reaction but that’s the way it was and everybody saw it.

“I was sitting after the game in the office of Anthony Taylor and spoke about it completely calm, about all the situations, how he saw the game and how I saw the game.

“It was a completely calm discussion. But anyway, that’s the situation – I got a red card and now we wait for the process.”

Klopp also refuted claims he stoked tensions between Liverpool and City with pre-match remarks about the Premier League champions’ spending power.

The 55-year-old suggested that no team was able to complete with three Gulf state-owned European clubs who could ‘do what they want’ financially.

“That is the life of people who speak in public. It is not the first time I am misunderstood. I know what I thought when I said it,” added Klopp.

“If someone misunderstands that, or wants to misunderstand that, I cannot change that.

“Do I have to be careful? I have known for years that I am not always careful. I realise as well from time to time that I just answer and say what I think.

“I try to do that in the future as well because usually it is never my aim to blame anybody or whatever.

“I just talk about things that I think are not that important in life actually.

“I say what I know about it, how I judge it or how I see it. I cannot change that. Nothing of the things that were made of it were my intention.”
