Six Liverpool players in Ballon d’Or running

Six Liverpool players are in the running for the 2022 Ballon d’Or.

Fabinho, Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Luis Diaz all were named on the shortlist for France Football’s prestigious award.

Darwin Nunez was also among the list of contenders after scoring 34 goals in 41 appearances for Benfica prior to joining Jurgen Klopp’s side this summer.

Sadio Mane joins his former Reds teammates on the shortlist after leading Senegal to success in the Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualification.

The Anfield club will also be represented in another of the Ballon d’Or’s main accolades after Alisson was nominated for the Yashin Award on Friday.

Alisson won the Premier League’s Golden Glove award with 20 clean sheets across the previous campaign and kept 27 in all competitions for Liverpool.

He is set to go head-to-head with nine other goalkeepers, including the Manchester City stopper and his fellow Brazil international Ederson.

The Ballon d’Or winner, which is chosen by football journalist worldwide, will be announced in a ceremony at Paris’ Theatre du Chatelet on October 17.

In a change to the previous format, votes are based on players’ achievements during the 2021/22 season, rather than across the current calendar year.
