Liverpool pair named in Golden Boy shortlist

Two Liverpool players have been nominated for the European Golden Boy.

Harvey Elliott and new signing Fabio Carvalho are among 100 players vying to be recognised as the continent’s best performers under the age of 21.

The pair were named on the award’s 100-man list announced on Wednesday.

Elliott recovered from an early-season injury to feature for Jurgen Klopp’s side as they claimed the Carabao Cup and FA Cup as part of a possible quadruple.

The midfielder also scored in the penalty shootout of the former to help the Reds win their first trophy of the season after beating Chelsea in February.

Carvalho, meanwhile, earned a summer move to Anfield by producing 11 goals and eight assists as Fulham scured their return to the Premier League.

But the duo, both 19, will face stern competition in the battle to succeed Barcelona prodigy Pedri as the latest winner of the Golden Boy accolade.

Pedri’s club teammate Gavi, Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham and Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga are already installed as firm favourites.

One ex-Liverpool player was also included on the Golden Boy’s running order in the form of defender Ki-Jana Hoever, now with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Raheem Sterling is the club’s only previous recipient of the prestigious award originally set up by Italian newspaper Tuttosport, winning it back in 2014.
