Salah given answer over his Liverpool future

Liverpool will not be offering Mohamed Salah a new long-term deal anytime soon.

Salah made an impassioned plea for his current contract to be extended beyond its summer 2023 expiry after Sunday’s draw with Manchester United.

When asked by the Norwegian channel TV2 about his future, the Reds’ forward said: “I do not know.

“If you ask, I say I want to stay here as long as I can. But, as I have said before, it is in the hands of the club.

“I will always give 100% to the last minute I am in this club and I want to win as many trophies as I can.

“And I want to give 100% to the people, who show me love all the time.”

However Anfield chiefs currently have no plans to table an extension to the Egyptian or several senior figures in the Premier League champions’ squad.

The coronavirus pandemic is being factored into the decision not to also hand improved terms to first-team mainstays Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho and Alisson.

Salah is one of eight Liverpool players whose contracts will expire just 12 months before manager Jurgen Klopp’s own deal is set to run in June 2024.

Speculation over the two-time Golden Boot winner’s future has intensified following a revealing interview he gave to Spanish newspaper AS last month.

The 28-year-old opened himself to the prospect of a move to Real Madrid or Barcelona, admitting “We never know what is going to happen in the future”.
