Liverpool face Napoli again in UCL groups

Liverpool will again face Napoli in the Champions League’s group stage.

The sides did battle at the same point in last season’s competition, with the Reds qualifying ahead of their Italian counterparts in a group finale.

Alisson made a string of impressive saves for Jurgen Klopp’s side in the close-run encounter that was settled by strike from Mohamed Salah late in the first half.

Thursday’s draw also added personal connections to the reigning European champions’ Group E campaign with the inclusions of Red Bull Salzburg and Genk.

Both Sadio Mane and Naby Keita enjoyed spells at the Austrian Bundesliga side while Divock Origi began his professional career with De Buffalo’s.

“I don’t know how often I’ve now played against Napoli, but they’re obviously a very experienced side,” said Klopp.

“I will need now to have another, closer look at Genk and Salzburg, but I already know they are very young, very exciting and very fresh, so it will be interesting, 100 per cent.

“I don’t think I’ve ever played against Salzburg or Genk, so that’s interesting. It’s how it always is, it’s not an easy group and not a group where we can hide behind anybody.

“We have to try everything to go through, but we are really looking forward to it like always.

“Now we know the opponents, when we were walking off the pitch from training I immediately spoke with Divock about playing Genk!

“We will do our analysis and research on all three teams, but we know they all played exceptional seasons last year.

“Of course, Salzburg are famous for bringing through new players, like they did with Sadio and Naby – they’ve found a lot of others, too. It will be really interesting.”

Liverpool will open their Group E campaign at the Stadio San Paolo on Tuesday, September 17 before welcoming Salzburg to Anfied on Wednesday, October 2.

A double-header with Genk follows with the first game taking place in Belgium on Wednesday, October 23 with the return leg on Tuesday, November 5.

Klopp’s side entertain Napoli on Wednesday, November 27 before closing the group at the Red Bull Arena on Tuesday, December 10 in a 5.55pm kick-off.

Both Alisson and Virgil van Dijk received awards as the Champions League’s best players following their starring roles in Liverpool’s eventual triumph.

The pair were crowned Goalkeeper and Defender of last season respectively while Van Dijk also beat Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year.

A vote of 80 coaches from last season’s Champions League and Europa League group stages and journalists from UEFA’s 55 member associations chose the Dutchman as the winner.

“First of all, I think I need to thank all of my teammates,” said Van Dijk.

“Without all of them and without the staff, I wouldn’t have achieved what I’ve achieved over the last year especially. I thank my family of course.

“It’s been a long road but that’s part of my journey, it’s part of who I am. I needed it like this, I’m not a player who was 18 years old and had that rise straight away.

“I had to work hard for every step of the way – that’s part of me and I’m very happy about that.

“I’m very proud to get this trophy and it’s all credit to everyone that’s helped me along the way.”
