Klopp braced for ‘crazy’ Champions League draw

Jurgen Klopp has described the upcoming Champions League draw as ‘crazy’.

Liverpool will discover where they will start their European champions defence against when the competition’s group stages are decided on Thursday in Monaco.

As the current holders, Klopp’s side will be seeded in Pot 1 in Monaco with Premier League champions Manchester City and Europa League winners Chelsea.

But Real Madrid, who defeated the Reds in the 2018 final, have been bumped down into Pot 2 alongside Borussia Dortmund, Tottenham and Atletico Madrid.

Klopp admits the prospect of any team facing a possible ‘group of death’ is stronger than in previous years and negates calls for a European Super League.

He said: “We haven’t really thought about the Champions League.

“But at one point someone told me a little bit about the groups and what could happen and I don’t think there was ever a stronger Pot 2.

“They should all be in Pot 1, but there is not enough space there.

“I don’t think there was ever a stronger Pot 3. Then Pot 4 you can get RB Leipzig — wow. The groups will be incredible.

“If people really think about [wanting] this kind of Super League, then you don’t need it. That’s it.”

The Liverpool manager also disputes suggestions that the standards of their continental counterparts have slipped following last season’s semi-finals.

Barcelona crashed out at Anfield despite holding a three-goal lead from the first leg while Tottenham stunned Ajax to set up an all-English final last June.

“We have the same chance like everyone else, but that is all, and no, I don’t see us, the English teams, dominating,” added Klopp.

“I really think a lot of teams have a good chance. Bayern Munich now finally brought in [Ivan] Perisic and [Philippe] Coutinho, which is a big boost.

“Look at the squad Borussia Dortmund has and tell me we are stronger than them. That is incredible. They can make five changes and you think, ‘Really they didn’t play last week? Why?’

“There are a lot of quality teams — Juventus will be there, PSG will be there. Whatever happens they will find solutions. Real Madrid? Do you think they gave up already?

“Last season, I said it, we deserved it against Barcelona but we were lucky as well. Tottenham were lucky against Ajax.

“After the first game of the semi-finals, I think everyone would have said the final will be Ajax versus Barcelona, but it was Tottenham and Liverpool.

“So we had to really fight for it with everything. You need luck in the right moments. We needed [Ousmane] Dembélé to shoot the ball somewhere [but in the goal] in the first game at Barcelona.

“I will have no problem with it [reaching the final] if it happens again, but at this moment I am not too sure it will.”

This season’s final will take place on May 30 at Istanbul’s Ataturk Stadium, where Liverpool staged an iconic comeback to defeat AC Milan in the 2005 showpiece.
