Liverpool are set to take part in FIFA’s revamped Club World Cup in 2021.
World football’s governing body is preparing to overhaul the competition and has deemed that the Reds will be among those included in the new 24-team format.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have been elected guaranteed entrants by UEFA as one of the Champions League winners in the four years building up to the tournament.
The newly-crowned European champions will also be joined by Real Madrid, who defeated them in last season’s final with a further two winners also set to follow.
However UEFA are yet to decide on which sides will make up the remaining four places available but are understood to be considering club coefficient standings.
At present, that would mean the inclusions of Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus and Manchester City as the teams in highest-ranked positions.
Should one of those sides lift the Champions League in the next two seasons, Paris Saint-German would become the immediate beneficiary.
According to The Times, however, FIFA have stipulated that only two clubs from the same country will be allowed to take part in the new Club World Cup.
Liverpool are taking part in this year’s edition of the competition, which includes the champions of all six continents, when they travel to Qatar in December.
