Xherdan Shaqiri is set to miss Liverpool’s start to pre-season through injury.
Shaqiri suffered a torn calf in Switzerland’s Nations League play-off defeat to England last month which has now been assessed by the Reds’ medical team.
The winger reported back for training on Monday but is now expected to be sidelined for large parts of the summer campaign with the injury setback.
Jurgen Klopp admits that Shaqiri will not be involved in Liverpool’s early preparations but did not give a time frame for the 27-year-old’s return.
However he is unlikely to be included in Liverpool’s tour of the United States, which begins next week with a friendly against Borussia Dortmund in Indiana.
“Shaq is still injured from the national team and it will take a while until he is in again,” Klopp told the club’s official website.
“He has a tear in his calf, so he will not be involved for a while.”
The European champions head into their pre-season campaign with Divock Origi as their only established attacking player owing to a host of international absences.
Roberto Firmino is set to be a late returnee after Brazil’s Copa America win alongside Mohamed Salah, who bowed out of the Africa Cup of Nations last week.
Sadio Mane is still involved in the latter competition with Senegal, leaving only Origi, Rhian Brewster and Ben Woodburn able to lead the line over the summer.
