Three Liverpool players have been drafted into England’s Nations League squad.
Joe Gomez earned a recall for Gareth Southgate’s side for their semi-final clash with Holland this summer after returning from a second injury lay-off.
The Reds defender spent four months on the sidelines with knee ligament damage but has made six appearances in all competitions since mid-April.
Joining Gomez are Anfield teammates Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who were both instrumental for Jurgen Klopp’s side during the season run-in.
Alexander-Arnold record the assists for Premier League players in a single season thanks to two in the final league game against Wolves.
Gomez has admitted that life on the sidelines following his December injury was difficult to take as his Liverpool teammates continued to fight on dual fronts.
“It’s probably underestimated a bit how much it can affect us as footballers,” he told the club’s official website.
“Like it might just seem that you’re injured and now you just watch the boys, but it hurts – especially [in] a year like this that was pretty historic.
“To watch a large majority of those games, having had a taste of it at the beginning, was difficult to take.
“Obviously it was nice to overcome it and get a bit of involvement at the end.
“We’ve just got to move on now and we’ve got a big game. There’s a lot of ups and downs, but it’s all a learning curve.”
Southgate is set to trim four players from his provisional 27-man squad before the Three Lions jet out for the Nations League finals in Portugal next month.
