Van Dijk urges patience in ‘tough’ Bayern trip

Virgiil van Dijk says Liverpool will need to be patient against Bayern Munich.

Wednesday’s Champions League last 16 return fixture is delicately poised after the Reds held the Bundesliga holders to a goalless draw three weeks ago.

Last season’s finalists would edge past Niko Kovac’s side and into the quarter finals by recording either a score draw or a victory at the Allianz Arena.

A gutsy performance is expected to be required in Bavaria and Van Dijk, who was suspended for the first leg, has warned that Liverpool will need to weather the storm.

He said: “It is maybe a bit too simple to just say that (it’s about character).

“But sometimes you have to know how to manage games because at times it is going to be very hard and we will need to patient, ready for what is coming.

“There will times when it is going to be very tough, we are going to be under pressure because they have a lot of quality and they showed that.

“But we will definitely have our own moments because of the quality we have as well.”

Van Dijk is also keen for Liverpool to improve on their last continental away trip, when they lost to Paris Saint-Germain in their penultimate group stage game.

“It is going to be an exciting tie. They played very well here [at Anfield], kept it tight especially at the back and they obviously showed us a lot of respect,” he added.

“They changed a bit the way they played I think, so we need to be up for a big fight because they are probably going to come all in, especially in the beginning.

“It is going to be tough and we need to do better than we did in the last away games in the Champions League.”
