Alexander-Arnold wins match ball for assists feat

Trent Alexander-Arnold was given the match-ball for his hat-trick of assists in Liverpool’s win over Watford.

Alexander-Arnold became the youngest-ever player to set up three goals in a single Premier League game during Wednesday’s 5-0 demolition of the Hornets.

The Reds defender has recorded seven assists while and fellow full-back Andy Robertson is just one away from moving joint-second in the stats table.

Ahead of Sunday’s Merseyside derby with Everton, Jurgen Klopp has hailed Alexander-Arnold’s input and revealed that his efforts were formally recognised.

He said: “That’s modern football. If you ask a young boy what is your favourite position, I don’t think a lot of them would say ‘I want to be a full-back’.

“But football has changed. I was a full-back for a decent part of my career, I looked completely different to what the boys are doing.

“You have to be really strong defensively but also on the other side because a lot of teams clear the wing for the full-backs offensively.

“If you are then able to be open-minded enough and have the football quality to see some people in the same shirt in the box, that helps a lot.

“In that game (against Watford), it was exceptional. I don’t think I have ever been part of a game where somebody got a hat-trick in assists, so it was special.

“Did he get the match ball? He wanted it, got it… so it was really cool and let’s try to do something like that again!”
