Robertson urges Liverpool to ‘stand up’ to rivals

Andy Robertson has urged Liverpool to ‘stand up’ to results against dogged opponents.

Bayern Munich and Manchester United were able to frustrate Jurgen Klopp’s side in the space of five days by holding them to successive goalless draws.

The Reds passed up the chance to take a three-point lead over Manchester City in the Premier League title race with Sunday’s Old Trafford stalemate.

But Robertson believes that the current leaders should use those recent results against high-calibre rivals as a barometer of how highly they are now regarded.

“It’s a sign of respect but, as a team, I think we need to start respecting ourselves,” he told the club’s official website.

“Big teams like Bayern and Manchester United are full of world-class stars and they changed their way of playing to try to stop us.

“We need to take that as a mark of respect and not shy away from it, stand up to that and show them why there is respect.

“These big teams are showing us respect but maybe we need to start respecting ourselves.”

A raft of first-half injuries affected both sides on Sunday, with United forced into using all three of their substitutes before the game’s interval.

Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino also left the stadium on crutches with an ankle problem.

Robertson added: “Four substitutions in the first half is unheard of in a game like that and the ones that went off were struggling.

“We need to deal with that better because the game still was on and when the game stopped it kind of killed our momentum and we had to go again.

“We should have been at full throttle after all the pauses in the game.

“We need to work on that.”
