Ferguson could make Man Utd’s Liverpool team talk

Sir Alex Ferguson could deliver Manchester United’s team talk against Liverpool.

Ferguson retired from the Red Devils’ hot seat in 2013 but has been as a sounding board for his ex-player and current caretaker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The former United boss famously vowed to knock the Anfield club ‘off their perch’ and beat them to the Premier League title twice, in 1997 and 2009.

Ahead of Sunday’s Old Trafford clash, Solskjaer has offered his former mentor the chance to issue his side’s rallying cry against their fierce North West rivals.

Asked whether he would be engaging in his former mentor’s notorious mind games, he replied: “Nah. I don’t think Jurgen Klopp will read what I say and I’m not gonna read what he says. That’s for further down the line, I would think.

“But he [Ferguson] would be welcome to have his talk to the players if the gaffer wanted to because we know how much it meant to him to overtake Liverpool [in terms of titles won].

“Our players know what this game means for everyone at Manchester United.”

Solskjaer also believes a win over Liverpool, who could retake the upper hand in the title race with a win, would make the current United side ‘worthy of history’.

Under the Norwegian, the 20-time English champions have gone from strength to strength with 11 wins from their opening 13 matches.

Solskjaer was a boyhood Reds fan but is hoping to add them to a list of Premier League scalps which currently includes Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham.

“We want to build this team to be worthy of Manchester United history and it’s another step [beating Liverpool],” he added.

“Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea away – it was fantastic to win those three games. We want to be in the top four [at the close of the season] and we’re playing Liverpool.

“We know how big that game is for Manchester United, the staff, supporters, we’re just looking forward to another challenge for this team.

“We’ve taken a few steps in the right direction in that process of becoming a team that challenges higher up the league.”
