Former Liverpool defender Ian Ross has died at the age of 72.
Bill Shankly beat Arsenal and Chelsea to Ross’s signature when he joined the Reds’ youth set-up in 1963 before signing professional terms two years later.
The Glasgow-born player made his debut in January 1967, aged 19, and went on to make a further 68 appearances and scored four times in all competitions.
His penultimate goal came in the 1971 European Fairs Cup tie against Bayern Munich, when he faced off against iconic Germany captain Franz Beckenbauer.
Ross left Anfield a year later for Aston Villa and enjoyed spells at several Football League clubs, including Notts County and Wolves, before retiring in 1983.
A number of management stints followed with Huddersfield Town and KR Reykjavic among others as well as an initial caretaker role at Molineux.
