Klopp wary of Palace threat to Anfield record

Jurgen Klopp is wary of the threat Crystal Palace pose to Liverpool’s home league record.

Saturday’s Anfield encounter sees the Eagles looking to become the first team to dent a 31-unbeaten run in the Premier League for the current champions-elect.

The Reds have not suffered a domestic defeat since Palace’s 2-1 win in April 2017 but Klopp is refusing to take note of his side’s current fortress-like run.

Asked what has been a pivotal factor in Liverpool’s home record, Klopp replied: “Our common experience, the quality the boys produce on the pitch together with the crowd.

“That’s obviously the most different thing to two years ago, or three years ago especially.

“I think it was the Crystal Palace game (in 2015) when I ‘felt lonely’ because nobody thought we could change the game or whatever.

“The boys produced since then with a few nice performances at home so it’s a completely different atmosphere. That’s really cool and it helps massively.

“We reached a nice level and we have to use that again because Crystal Palace are really strong.

“I’ve said it a couple of times but I don’t know a lot of teams in Europe who have a front line with the quality of players like (Andros) Townsend, (Wilfried) Zaha and (Christian) Benteke, or (Jordan) Ayew, or whoever.

“It’s just a really high quality. We can [also] talk about the defence; one of the most exciting right full-backs of England (Aaron Wan-Bissaka) on one side, a very experienced Dutch guy on the left side (Patrick van Aanholt).

“(Mamadou) Sakho, (James) Tomkins and midfield (Luka) Milivojevic and whoever players with (Cheikhou) Kouyate, (James) McArthur, (Max) Meyer – that’s a proper team.

“That’s what we have to know and we have to respect. It’s not important how we played them last year, two years ago. We won there [in August], it was a difficult game and we know that.

“It’s not important how we have been last week, a year ago, half a year ago, a month ago. It’s only important how we will be tomorrow and that’s all I’m interested in.

“It will be really tough but with a slightly damaged squad injury-wise, we had a really good training [session] and hopefully we can bring that onto the pitch.”
