Thomas Muller is set to miss Bayern Munich’s Champions League double header with Liverpool.
The Germany international was previously sent off for a high kick at Nicolas Tagliafico’s head during the Bavarians’ 3-3 draw with Ajax on December 11.
Although Muller apologised to Tagliafico, UEFA have imposed a two-match ban which rules him out of the entirety of Bayern’s last 16 clash with the Reds.
Bayern confirmed on Friday that they will be appealing the striker’s suspension, which is a significant boost for Jurgen Klopp’s side heading into next month’s tie.
European football’s governing body also imposed disciplinary sanctions against Dejan Lovren for his social media outburst about Sergio Ramos in November.
Lovren appeared to brag about elbowing the Real Madrid captain in Croatia’s 3-2 victory over Spain in the Nations League encounter between the sides.
The defender, whose Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah was injured by Ramos in last year’s Champions League final, will now serve a one-game international ban.
UEFA rules dictate that action is taken against players ‘whose conduct is insulting or otherwise violates the basic rules of decent conduct’.
