Former Liverpool winger Peter Thompson dies

Tributes have been paid to Liverpool legend Peter Thompson, who has died aged 76.

Thompson was an integral part of Bill Shankly’s iconic 1960s team at Anfield, scoring 54 goals in 416 appearance since signing from Preston North End.

He earned a place in Reds’ folklore as part of the side that delivered the club’s first FA Cup triumph in 1965 in addition to two league championship wins.

International recognition followed with 16 caps for England and a place in Alf Ramsey’s 1966 World Cup squad before the provisional 28-man list was whittled down.

Shankly often spoke glowingly Thompson and hailed him ‘among the all-time greats, alongside such players as Tom Finney, Stanley Matthews and George Best’.

Liverpool confirmed the Carlisle-born winger’s passing on Monday, describing him as ‘a shining light for much of Bill Shankly’s reign as Reds manager’.
