Jurgen Klopp believes Liverpool may need a record points tally to win the Premier League.
Goals from Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk in Friday’s 2-0 win over Wolves ensured that the Reds will remain top of the table heading into Christmas.
Only 12 teams that headed into December 25 as league leaders have failed to win the title, with the Anfield club accounting for a quarter of that statistic.
Closest challengers and reigning champions Manchester City set a new standard with their title win last season with a previously unprecedented 100-point haul.
And Klopp feels that his side may need to go one better if Liverpool are to realise their ambitions of ending a 29-year wait for a return to domestic success.
He said: “Everybody asks me about the situation, first in the table and all that stuff and that the last four times a team was first in the table at Christmas they won the league.
“But was it ever such a tight race? I think all the other teams play tomorrow and then I think three or four teams will have more than 40 points at Christmas, which is really exceptional.
“If you want to do the headline ‘Klopp says you need 105 points [to win the league]’ then do it. I don’t think about it.
“I didn’t think before about it and I don’t think now about it; I only just try to answer in a polite way.”
