Liverpool will take on Bayern Munich in the Champions League’s last 16.
Monday’s draw for the knockout stages pitted Jurgen Klopp’s side against the Bundesliga champions when Europe’s elite club competition resumes next year.
Anfield will host the first leg on Tuesday, February 19 with the return leg taking place at the Allianz Arena three weeks later, on Wednesday, March 13.
Current connections between Merseyside and Bavaria include Xherdan Shaqiri, who was part of Bayern’s treble-winning side of 2013 during a three-year stay.
Several members of Klopp’s backroom staff also previously worked for the club including fitness coach Andreas Kornmayer and head of nutrition Mona Nemmer.
Klopp himself regularly jousted with Bayern while managing Borussia Dortmund and faced off against them in the 2013 Champions League final at Wembley.
Liverpool previously clashed with Niko Kovac’s side seven times competitively with their most recent meeting in 2001 as they ran out 3-2 winners in the UEFA Super Cup.
But their most famous encounter remains a 1-1 draw at Munich’s former Olympic Stadium that helped book the Reds’ place in the 1981 European Cup final.
“This is a different Bayern than what I played, we are already here for three years [and] since the Audi Cup [in the summer of 2017],” said Klopp.
“We all know the stadium, the atmosphere will be great. It’s a really nice trip for all our supporters, it’s a wonderful city, so that’s all good.
“The flight is not too long and we obviously know more about German football than about any other league, that’s true, but that doesn’t make a big, massive difference.
“In the end, the boys have to decide it on the pitch. Let’s give it a try.”
