Jurgen Klopp has revealed that a tactical shift was behind Liverpool’s breakthrough at Arsenal.
Saturday’s 1-1 draw at the Emirates Stadium was enough to restore the Reds’ place as Premier League leaders despite Alexandre Lacazette’s late equaliser.
James Milner opened the scoring on the hour mark after the visitors had initially laboured against a Gunners side resurgent under new manager Unai Emery.
And Klopp admits that a change in approach allowed Liverpool to take the lead.
He said: “The game was intense. It was clear Arsenal are in a very good moment.
“We made life a bit too easy for them in the first half. Formation-wise, I was not happy [with] how compact we were. When we had the ball it was good.
“After that we were a threat, we got in behind. With the goal I was happy. They are not too bad as well, so they equalise. It was a pretty open game.
“I think our set pieces were outstanding, Virgil (Van Dijk) should have scored from that. Virgil said in the media after the game he should have had a hat-trick, and that’s a shame.
“So in the second half we change formation a bit, and that helped us. We scored a pretty nice goal, and perhaps had other chances in the game.”
