Shaqiri unfazed by hostile Red Star reception

Xherdan Shaqiri is unfazed by a hostile reception in Liverpool’s trip to Red Star Belgrade.

Shaqiri enjoyed a starring role in the Reds’ 4-0 win over the Serbian champions at Anfield but faces greater attention in the corresponding leg on November 6.

The Swiss international will be a magnet for abuse at the Rajko Mitic Stadium following his controversial goal celebration during the World Cup this summer.

FIFA fined Shaqiri for making a two-handed gesture to symbolise the Albanian flag in his country’s highly-charged victory against Serbia in the group stages.

Tensions exist between players descended from Kosovan families, like Shaqiri, and Serbia due to the latter’s refusal to acknowledge the country’s independence status since 2008.

But the Liverpool winger insists that he has no concerns about travelling to Belgrade for the Group C follow-up despite the likely animosity he will face.

He said: “I saw a few things. One player I think said something but I don’t really care what people think.

“I’m just going there for a football game. It’s not about politics.

“I don’t work for nothing so I go there to play football and try to win a game.

“I had this already at the World Cup so I know what I can handle. It’s no problem.”
