Gotze told to revive career with Liverpool move

Mario Gotze has been urged to join Liverpool in order to rebuild his career.

Gotze turned down a reunion with Jurgen Klopp in 2016 before returning to Borussia Dortmund, just three years after leaving for Bayern Munich.

But the World Cup winner is struggling at Signal Iduna Park and was omitted from last weekend’s draw with Hoffenheim after just two first-team appearances.

The playmaker’s below-par performance in Dortmund’s Champions League win at Club Brugge is thought to have been behind Lucien Favre’s decision to drop him.

Kevin Grosskreutz, a former teammate of Gotze, believes that the 26-year-old may benefit from a switch to Liverpool in the January transfer window.

“I’m very sorry for Mario Gotze at the moment, because stuff is written about him – and only him – every day,” Grosskreutz told Sky Germany.

“In Brugge, for example, the whole team didn’t play well. Maybe it would be good for him to go abroad in the winter to find a bit more peace and bring his career back on track.

“Klopp knows him quite well, he would be a good fit for Liverpool.”

Speaking ahead of the Reds’ Carabao Cup tie with Chelsea, however, Klopp batted away the speculation about Gotze emanating from his homeland.

Asked about the 26-year-old, he replied: “Absolutely nothing I would want to talk about in a press conference in England before a game against Chelsea!

“If I have to say something to Mario then I would call him.”
