Salah referred to police over phone incident

Liverpool have referred Mo Salah to the police after appearing to use his mobile phone while driving.

Video footage posted on social media appeared to show Salah using the device at the wheel of his car following Sunday’s 4-0 win over West Ham.

The incident is understood to have taken place close to Anfield, where the Egypt international opened the scoring for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Salah reported for training on Monday and the Reds confirmed that the matter had already been referred by themselves to Merseyside Police.

“The club, after discussion with the player, have made Merseyside Police aware of the footage and the circumstances surrounding its capture,” said a club spokesman.

“We have spoken to the player also and will deal with any follow-up internally.

“Neither the club or player will be making any further comment on this matter.”

Current UK driving laws prevent the use of a handheld mobile phone even when a vehicle is stopped or stationary in traffic and can carry a penalty.

Drivers face receiving six points on their license or a £200 fine if caught.

Merseyside Police confirmed: “We have been made aware of a video believed to show a footballer using a mobile phone whilst driving.

“This has been passed to the relevant department. Thanks for letting us know.”
