Steven Gerrard appointed new Rangers manager

Liverpool coach Steven Gerrard has been appointed Rangers’ new manager.

Gerrard signed a four-year contract to take the reins with the Scottish Premiership outfit following caretaker Graeme Murty’s departure this week.

The ex-Reds captain will formally take charge at Ibrox in the summer, having only taken charge of the under-18 side at Anfield this season.

Among Gerrard’s first acts in Glasgow is the arrival of his one-time Liverpool teammate Gary McAllister as Rangers’ new assistant.

He said: “It was a no-brainer for me.

“There were a lot of different things to think about but from that first phone call I got a special feeling and I knew that Rangers were for me.

“I’m very aware of Rangers, the size of the club, I’ve watched them from afar and been lucky enough to watch some of the Old Firm games.

“This opportunity doesn’t come around all the time – clubs with this size, stature and history.

“I believe I can come in and make these fans happy.”

The 37-year-old is set to face off against his former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, currently in charge of reigning Scottish champions Celtic.
