UEFA charge Liverpool over Man City bus attack

Liverpool have been charged by UEFA after fans attacked Manchester City’s coach.

Pep Guardiola’s side were pelted with bottles, cans and flares as they arrived at Anfield for Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final first leg tie.

Two police officers suffered injuries in the incident as Reds supporters converged outside the stadium to provide a welcome for their own side.

UEFA have now issued proceedings against Liverpool, with the club set to face four charges related to the pre-match incidents on May 31.

They include the setting-off of fireworks, object-throwing, acts of damage and crowd disturbances.

European football’s governing body have brought the case against Anfield officials despite the incidents taking place outside the stadium itself.

According to UEFA’s security regulations, ‘host clubs and national associations are responsible for order and security both inside and around the stadium before, during and after matches’.

City were forced to source an alternative coach for their return journey from the 3-0 defeat after the damage to the original vehicle rendered it unsafe.

First-team coach Manel Estiarte posted footage from inside the damaged bus at the time of the attack on social media, labelling it ‘unacceptable’.

Pep Guardiola was also filmed sarcastically responding to Liverpool stewards over the lack of protection offered to his team as they arrived at the stadium.
