Lovren wins Liverpool player of the month after death threats

Liverpool fans have voted Dejan Lovren as their player of the month after he received death threats.

Lovren posted evidence of a message sent to him by a social media user targeting his family, which came on the back of a difficult on-field spell for the defender.

He slammed the threats as ‘disgusting’, adding “I don’t mind when people talk s*** about me, it says more about them!

“But I cannot ignore when my family is threatened. I just can’t and won’t accept that.”

The Croatia international suffered heavy criticism for his part in the Reds’ 4-1 defeat at Tottenham last month and was substituted midway through the first half.

But in the wake of the Instagram threat, supporters voting for the Anfield club’s monthly award pledged their support firmly behind him for the accolade.

Lovren scooped 33 per cent of the vote and will share the honour with Mohamed Salah, who accrued the same figure while Philippe Coutinho finished third with nine per cent.

The 28-year-old missed Liverpool’s previous two games after pulling up during the warm-up of last weekend’s 3-0 win over Huddersfield Town.

Jurgen Klopp has admitted that Lovren could also miss Saturday’s trip to West Ham with the injury.
