Gerrard urges Liverpool to ‘prove everyone wrong’

Steven Gerrard has urged Liverpool to ‘prove everyone wrong’ in their next two games.

Manchester United travel to Anfield on October 14 while the Reds face a trip to Tottenham just eight days later following an imperfect start to the season.

Jurgen Klopp’s side struggled for consistency in the opening two months of the campaign, winning just one of their previous seven games in all competitions.

Draws with Sevilla and Spartak Moscow in the Champions League were compounded by an humiliating Carabao Cup exit to Leicester City.

But Gerrard believes that Liverpool can deliver a statement of intent in their Premier League double header after the international break.

“I cannot wait for those two games,” he told Sky Sports.

“Because watching Liverpool since Jurgen has come in, they are the games where Liverpool seem to prove everyone wrong and put in top-class performances

“I think their record against the top sides is the best so if I was a Liverpool player or the Liverpool manager, those games can’t come quick enough.

“The frustrating thing for Liverpool at the moment is the international break after a couple of games where they feel they should have done better.

“I think Liverpool will itching once the international break is over and really relishing those games.

“As a fan, I am looking forward to watching them in those games because I think they can bounce back.

“With one good result or a couple of good results, they will find themselves back in the top four.”

Klopp has faced growing scrutiny in the wake of Liverpool’s indifferent start, with some supporters clamouring for the German to be relieved of his duties.

But Gerrard, currently managing Anfield’s under-18 side, has reaffirmed his belief that the former Borussia Dortmund coach remains the right man.

He added: “The league doesn’t lie – Liverpool are where they are.

“But what I would say is I am really enjoying watching the team at the moment.

“I love the manager. I think he has taken this team and the club forward. There is a lot of excitement about.

“I can see Jurgen is a little bit frustrated at the moment but so are we all. We are all fans.

“Of course, it could have been a little bit better if chances had gone in or individual errors could have been avoided.

“But we are seven games in and Liverpool are capable of going on a long run of winning games.

“I am very, very confident that this season can be a success, whether that be in the league or in Europe or the FA Cup. I am a big, big believer in this manager.”
